Hurriyah Cafe

You all know that scene in Ratatouille, where the one bite of Remy’s version of the eponymous dish transports a scowling food critic to memories of his mother’s cooking? We’re almost certain you’ll be feeling the same warm-hearted nostalgia after tasting the food from Huriyyah. Meaning ‘freedom’ in Palestinian, the restaurant is however firmly rooted in classic Malay cuisine and you’ll find some very special versions of old school favourites like Ayam Masak Merah, which is so wonderfully fat with sweet, spicy and sour flavours that are tempered with the interesting use of dried hawthorn to round out whatโ€™s typically a fire-breather of a dish. Beef-heads will dig the Daging Masak Hitam; this is a savoury stew-like concoction with flavorful jerky-like beef simmered in sweet black soy and proprietary spice mix, that head chef Nur Zafirah is exceptionally fond of. For an elevated celebration you canโ€™t go wrong with the Ikan Merah Sup which unlike others, has this incredibly velvet texture that feels like mouthfuls of collagen as you slurp the clean, fresh fish broth.

Want something familiar but equally out of this world? Youโ€™ve got to give the Ayam Berempah a go. Thick and succulent chicken pieces perfectly marinated and fried so well, itโ€™s literally mouthwatering as you bite into it. The food is homey and comforting, and while she’s used her almost two decades worth of chef experience to add her own touches to these traditional recipes, Chef Nur Zafirah is often reminded of her nenek’s cooking when she makes these recipes โ€“ this is what love tastes like. The Miri native is adamant on making sure each dish is reflective of her attention to detail, and that every meal is cooked with fresh, clean and quality ingredients. For classic Malay and Asian dishes simply done well, Hurriyah has you covered.
