The World Tapas Championship and Exhibition crowned Miri native, Liew Kit Kiet, with the Accésit Mahou San Miguel Award for his elegant ‘Pearl of Borneo’ entry this year, bringing Sarawak’s cuisine and the island of Borneo to the world’s attention. In a thrilling recognition as one of the top five entries this year, it’s a clear indication that the island’s talent and unique medley of cuisines, has world-class potential. This is the second year that a Borneo native has made it to the international segment of the event. Liew’s creation consisted of a mochi-textured ‘pearl’ tart that drew inspiration from the famous Sarawak Laksa dish; a refined combination of classic Sarawakian flavours with a deep a rich Mole base, expertly crafting subtle notes of recognition and innovation in his standout submission.

Liew said he was beyond words and expressed his gratitude to the Malaysian delegation and supporters who had followed him through the competition. “I had hoped to make it into the top 3 but knowing I am in the Top 5 is already an incredible feeling. I’m very happy and grateful for the support – from the Sarawak government, my mentors and everyone who has been with me throughout this journey,” he said adding that he was looking forward to returning to his restaurant to improve his craft and push even further for the upcoming World National Tapas and World Asia Tapas Competitions in 2026.

Andrea Vignali (Australia) scored top honours for his creation, ‘Humo bajo la tapa’ – Smoke Under the Lid, followed by Chen Cheng Dian (Taiwan) with ‘Esmeralda’ in second place, and Øyvind Bøe Dalelv (Norway) with ‘La reina del mar’ or ‘The Queen of the Sea’ in third. Meanwhile, the Accésit Querétaro Award went to Iñigo Tizón (Spain) for ‘Los lunes al sol’ and the ‘Accésit Alimentos de Valladolid Award’ went to Carlos Maestre Sánchez (Austria) for ‘La nación más pequeña del mundo’.The World National Tapas and the World Asia Tapas competitions in 2026 is set to take place from June 17 to 21 in Miri, Sarawak.
