The 9th World Junior Wushu Championships touch down  in Brunei recently and it was a thrilling showcase of the best young wushu athletes from all over the world. Interested in an elegant show of flying kicks and smooth back flips? Then, the National Indoor Stadium was a great place to be. You could see the Wushu athletes with their colourful and sparkly outfits popping and showing moves that you could never knew a human could ever do. Some were seen with such poise and intimidating aura, especially when holding weapons like swords and spears (fret not, they are not using real ones!). The cheers from the crowd were truly unforgettable – everyone was stomping their feet and screaming their lungs out. It was certainly the most ear-deafening and heart-pumping tournament many in Brunei have ever spectated!

Brunei managed to cinch three gold, three silvers and two bronze medals for this championship, with Walid Lachkar triumphing in the Boy’s Daoshu ‘A’ category with an outstanding score of 9.186. The other gold medalists Meagan Marie Keasberry and Samuel Yong Jun Ong, topped the Girl’s Taijiquan ‘C’ and Boy’s Taijiquan ‘C’ categories respectively. When asked about who their role models are, both exclaimed “Of course it has got to be Basma!”, showing pride in their fellow Bruneian Wushu athlete. The fun and dance-y soundtrack “Young Wushu Warriors” that was continuous throughout the five day event got the crowds singing along. Go, go go Wushu go!
